While many Etobicoke townhouses don't really have enough property for homeowners to erect fences, you'll find that you can afford a house with a pretty significant lot size when you buy in the Addington Highlands. You might find, however, that your perfect country peace and quiet isn't quite private or peaceful enough. In this case, you may decide to erect a fence around your property. We'll give you an overview of the fence planning and construction process so that you know what you're getting into before you begin.

Choose a Fence

The first step in your fence preparation process is to figure out why you want a fence, as this will determine which type of fence is best for you. There are several reasons why the owners of Windsor, Ontario homes might want fences. If you want a fence for privacy, you'll want a solid board or stone fence that will keep out prying eyes. If you're looking to elegantly mark a boundary, you might choose a rail or picket fence. If you're just looking to keep other people and pets off your lawn, you'll want a chain link or wrought iron fence.

Zoning and Permissions

Before you can go ahead and start building your fence, you need to check with the Township of Addington Highlands to see what the rules are for fences in your neighborhood. Some places don't allow fences over a certain height. You also need to find the correct property boundary so you don't encroach on your neighbor's Rosedale real estate. You should also talk to that neighbor about whether he or she is on board with you putting a fence up and will let you onto his or her property during construction.

Budget

If you're putting up a boundary fence between your PEI real estate and your neighbor's, ideally you and your neighbor will agree on the type of fence and split the cost of its construction. However, if your neighbor does not want a fence you might have to move it slightly onto your side and foot the bill yourself. The type of fence you choose and the length of your boundary will determine the cost. Chain link is the cheapest type of fence per foot, followed by wood, wrought iron, and stonework.

Put it Up

If you're going to hire a professional contractor to install the fence, you and your neighbor should split the cost. However, if you're going to do most of the work yourself, you'll need to figure out a work schedule. Will you work together or will one of you work on the fence while the other is out selling Leslieville homes? If there is inequality in the work, you might want to consider financial compensation to make up for it.
